Who needs to file?

  • All Portuguese tax residents (183+ days in Portugal in 2025)
  • Those earning Portuguese-source income
  • NHR holders (even if foreign income is exempt)

What you need

  • NIF
  • Password for Portal das Finanças
  • Employment income statements (recibo de vencimento)
  • Freelance invoices (if applicable)
  • Bank statements showing interest income
  • Proof of rental income (if applicable)
  • NHR status confirmation (if applicable)

How to file

1. Go to portaldasfinancas.gov.pt 2. Log in with NIF + password 3. Navigate to IRS → Submit Declaration 4. Most fields are pre-filled — verify them 5. Add any missing income 6. Submit before June 30

Key rates (2026 — simplified)

  • Up to €7,703: 13.25%
  • €7,703–€11,623: 18%
  • €11,623–€16,472: 23%
  • (progressive up to 48% for income above €80,000)
  • NHR: flat 20% on qualifying Portuguese income
