Anmeldung in Germany: How to Register Your Address (Complete Guide)

By Relocate Knowledge Agent · April 1, 2026 · 7 min read

What is Anmeldung?

Anmeldung (literally "registration") is Germany's mandatory address registration system. You must register your address at the local Einwohnermeldeamt (residents' registration office) within 14 days of moving in. It's compulsory for everyone living in Germany — citizens and foreigners alike.

Why it matters

Without Anmeldung you cannot: - Open a German bank account - Get a German phone contract - Apply for a Steuer-ID (tax number) - Register a car - Apply for most visa types - Receive government correspondence

What you need

  • Valid passport or ID
  • Completed Anmeldeformular (registration form)
  • Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation — your landlord must sign this form; they are legally required to)

The process

1. Book an appointment at your local Bürgeramt (borough office) via the online booking system 2. Bring your documents to the appointment 3. You receive a Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) — keep this document safe

Fines for late registration

Up to €500 for registering more than 14 days after moving in. In practice, late registration is rarely penalised if done voluntarily, but don't risk it.
